One World at Vanier What is One World? One World is like a regular music class that any student can take, except much cooler. Students get to use state of the art equipment and techniques to compose and produce their very own songs and beats. Apart from just making music, the students learn that the creating of original, new and excellent music gives them a very powerful voice. Our music is heard throughout the community and world – so we have an obligation to use our voice responsibly.
At Georges Vanier, the music we create is of the highest caliber, but what distinguishes the work that we do is the powerful positive message carried by our art. The One World program has been recognized for excellence by the Ontario Music Educators Association.

More about One World One World puts social justice, equity and character at the top of the curriculum. We invite other schools around the world to join us in the collaborative creation of music that is positive, excellent and capable of changing our world through the process of bringing the world’s young people together on the creation of music. Contact us through this MySpace page if you’d like to create a One World partner facility at your school or community centre (anywhere in the world) – and we’ll help you get going.
The One World Youth Arts Project at Georges Vanier Secondary School (Don Mills and Sheppard) is an initiative of the Toronto School Board that, together with community partners, will see the development of a school/community facility that is unique in North America. The primary initial focus of this facility will be to provide the opportunity for young people from across the city of Toronto to participate in a program that has relevance and meaning to modern youth. We will also provide training to in-service and pre-service teachers to equip them to become adherents of the One World philosophy and become partners in the development of modern enhancements to music education programs in Canada. One World will begin as a pilot facility that will be a model for the development of these enhanced music education programs across the country. The nature of these partner facilities will vary depending on the particular circumstances in which they are developed. But all One World partners will share the philosophy of providing meaningful creative learning environments to all students – an environment in which these children will be uplifted by empowering them to make an important positive contribution to our global community. Social justice, equity and the nourishment of individual character are at the top of the One World curriculum.
Our preliminary work over the past ten years has proven the consistent effectiveness of this program in serving young people of every race, creed and gender. But it has been with minority youth, and those young people who have been disenfranchised and marginalized, that we have enjoyed the most success. Indeed, it has been these marginalized youth who have driven the success of One World and who have helped to create one of the most excellent creative arts programs in Canada. Testimony to this success can be taken from the students themselves. Our work has been documented by many media organizations and we have available a DVD video that contains some of this media coverage. On this DVD you can hear young people describe in their own words what participation in this program has meant to them. A recurring theme is that One World has made school meaningful again and that having a relevant educational program that speaks to who they are and that provides them with opportunities to grow and develop in their own way, helps them to complete their schooling and graduate from high school and enter post-secondary training or the workplace, with knowledge, skills, and confidence. Over the years, students participating in our annual CD productions have enjoyed a high school graduation rate of almost 100%!
One World is accessible. We have enjoyed tremendous success – not by working with a pre-selected few, but by opening our doors to all young people who have a desire to create music – regardless of their prior experience. We welcome young people who excel in school and in life, those who are on the margins and those truly at-risk youth who are not currently attending school regularily. We have learned that the prior experiences of youth coming into One World is not the best determinant of their potential and that some of the finest art created in the One World program has been created by young people for whom One World has provided a fresh start. We are most proud of the diversity that is represented in our program. By bringing young people together, we can turn lives around. We can set an example for the kind of community that we hope the world might one day become.
One World is arts education that goes beyond the aesthetic. Our young peoples’ creative abilities are nourished and directed towards the creation of art that is excellent and that speaks positively and optimistically to important issues concerning our youth and our global community. Indeed, we have had, and will continue to have, a positive impact on the global community and we have already made a substantial contribution to children in the developing world and here at home.
One World will become an international project with mirror facilities being created in the developing world – all connected by broadband. Canadian children will soon be able to collaborate in near real time with young people in the developing world, and evrywhere else, on the creation of art that is a unique blend of many cultures. Imagine a generation of young people who have grown up working hand-in-hand with young people from all over the world – working together to create and share a message of hope and optimism! One World is exactly that – the genesis of a new global community, united through artistic creation and expression.
In order to realize the potential of One World, we are calling on our partners in the community, in government and in business to participate through financial support, in-kind support and participation in the day-to-day operation of the facility – day and night, and on weekends. One World will be a training centre for students, young people from the community, and for in-service and pre-service teachers across the country as we redefine the arts education paradigm and share what we have learned. One World marks a bold new direction for arts education – one in which all children will be provided with a wonderful opportunity to grow and realize their creative potential and in which no child will be left out.
Benefits of taking One world Graduates of the One World Youth Arts program have access to many opportunities after high school. Many of our graduates are pursuing successful careers in the music industry. Students who take a package of arts courses, can continue their studies at university.
How can you join One World? The One World Program is open to any student who has had a desire to learn to create and produce original music. Just sign up for One World as one of your courses.
